A bear attacked a 9-year-old boy in Alaska, authorities said.

The boy was hunting with an adult when the bear attacked on Tuesday, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

Soldiers said the adult shot and killed the bear.

The boy was seriously injured in the attack. The adult was also injured, but his injuries are considered minor, authorities said.

The bear, a sow, was with her cubs at the time of the attack, Alaska television station KTUU reported. Authorities were reportedly unable to locate the cub when they returned to the scene of the attack.

Locals reported bears killing chickens and turkeys this month, KTUU reported. However, officials said the sow did not appear to be responsible for any attacks on other animals.
