Actress says if she had seen an Ariel of her color when she was younger, it would have changed her outlook on life

The protagonist of “The Little Mermaid”, Halle Bailey admitted that she was surprised by the reactions of black children when they watched a small trailer for the film, which is scheduled for release in May 2023.

“It was a crazy feeling to see everyone’s reaction to the teaser. It was amazing and I cried with all these videos they sent me,” said the young actress.

Halle, 22, was announced as Ariel in 2019. But, she was already known for the duo Chloe x Halle. A year earlier, the sisters made their television debut playing the twins Jazz and Sky Forster in the series Grown-ish.

In real life, however, they are two years apart in age.

“I am very happy and full of gratitude. It reminds me of being grounded and grateful to have this opportunity,” she explained, who also suffered from several racist comments, but she didn’t want to get into this issue during a video she made about the teaser’s backlash.

Previously, she had already spoken out about racism. “I don’t care about the negative issues that come up, I’m so grateful for this role that’s bigger than me, which is amazing and I think it’s going to be beautiful. I’m really happy to be a part of it,” she said during an interview with Variety.

Halle has preferred to emphasize the importance of her character. “I know what it would mean to me, as a little girl, if I had seen a black Ariel when I was younger. If I had seen that, it would have changed my whole outlook on life. The fact that I’m doing this is really cool and unbelievable to me.”
